We describe a transient figurate erythema in an 11-month-old female infant with a 2-month history of arcuate and annular erythematous lesions localized on the face, trunk, and limbs. Constitutional symptoms were absent. Previous medical history was unremarkable. Full blood examination, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, antistreptolysin-O titer, anti-Ro, and anti-La antibodies were within normal limits or negative. Histologic examination revealed a superficial and deep perivascular and interstitial dermatitis constituted mostly of neutrophils and abundant nuclear dust. The lesions resolved spontaneously within a few months without scarring or atrophy. Recurrence has not occurred. This case suggests that figurate erythemas in infants rarely may disclose a neutrophilic histologic pattern, which must be differentiated from that of other neutrophilic dermatoses.  相似文献

Zoonoses are diseases, the infections of which can be transmitted between man and animals. Only a few are of importance with respect to poultry meat and meat from cattle, sheep, horses and goats. Advances in the control of diseases such as tuberculosis, brucellosis and trichinosis in animals have reduced the hazards posed to workers in the meat industry and to consumers of meat. However, inspection of animals ante- and post-mortem cannot detect all infectious agents present. This applies particularly to bacteria such as Campylobacter, Salmonella, verotoxigenic and other pathogenic Escherichia coli and Yersinia. Protection of meat workers from infection depends upon taking normal hygienic precautions, which also protect the meat from contamination from the workers. Consumers are exposed to a smaller range of zoonoses than meat workers because they encounter only meat that has passed inspection. In addition, heavily contaminated parts of the animal, such as the hide, feathers and viscera have been removed. Further advances in making meat safer are likely to result from the introduction of Integrated Quality Assurance systems. These involve identifying, monitoring and keeping records of the disease status and treatment of each animal (or poultry flock) so that its history is known when it reaches the abattoir. They should also include programmes aimed at minimising colonisation by zoonotic bacteria such as camplyobacters, salmonellas and verotoxigenic Escherichia coli.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the relation of hysterectomy and oophorectomy to heart disease risk factors. METHODS: Data were collected and analyzed for 1150 women aged 50 through 89. RESULTS: Of these women, 21.8% reported hysterectomy with bilateral oophorectomy; 22.1%, hysterectomy with ovarian conservation. Compared with women without hysterectomy, oophorectomized women, especially those 20 or more years postmenopause, had increased lipids, lipoproteins, glucose, and insulin; blood pressures were increased among current estrogen users. Women with hysterectomies with ovarian conservation had similar or more favorable risk factors than nonhysterectomized women. CONCLUSIONS: Bilateral oophorectomy, but not hysterectomy, may have long-term negative consequences for heart disease risk factors not totally ameliorated by estrogen use.  相似文献

The Ma3 gene is one of six genes that regulate the photoperiodic sensitivity of flowering in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench). The ma3R mutation of this gene causes a phenotype that is similar to plants that are known to lack phytochrome B, and ma3 sorghum lacks a 123-KD phytochrome that predominates in light-grown plants and that is present in non-ma3 plants. A population segregating for Ma3 and ma3 was created and used to identify two randomly amplified polymorphic DNA markers linked to Ma3. These two markers were cloned and mapped in a recombinant inbred population as restriction fragment length polymorphisms. cDNA clones of PHYA and PHYC were cloned and sequenced from a cDNA library prepared from green sorghum leaves. Using a genome-walking technique, a 7941-bp partial sequence of PHYB, was determined from genomic DNA from ma3 sorghum. PHYA, PHYB, and PHYC all mapped to the same linkage group. The Ma3-linked markers mapped with PHYB more than 121 centimorgans from PHYA and PHYC. A frameshift mutation resulting in a premature stop codon was found in the PHYB sequence from ma3 sorghum. Therefore, we conclude that the Ma3 locus in sorghum is a PHYB gene that encodes a 123-kD phytochrome.  相似文献

The stereochemistry of beta-oxidation of alpha-methyl-branched fatty acids was analyzed, in rat liver and in human cells, with (2R)- and (2S)-2-methyltetradecanoic acid as model substrates. In rat liver, formation of the alpha,beta-unsaturated compound was found to be concentrated in mitochondria while in human cells, this activity co-distributed mainly with peroxisomal marker enzymes. In both cases, the dehydrogenating enzymes were absolutely specific for the (2S)-enantiomer. In human liver, activation was some three times faster with the (2R)- than with the (2S)-isomer while in rat liver both were activated at about the same rate.  相似文献

The concentration and affinity to concanavalin A (ConA) of plasma alpha 1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) and AGP levels in extracts of liver tissues were investigated in specific-pathogen-free chickens infected with the highly virulent HPS-2 strain or virulent reference GBF-1 strain of infectious bursal disease virus. The plasma AGP value in uninfected control 3- to 7-wk-old chickens was 161.8 +/- 25.8 micrograms/ml (mean +/- SD), and ConA-unreactive and ConA-reactive AGP comprised 47% and 63% of total AGP. Increases in AGP levels in plasma and liver extracts were observed in both the HPS-2 and the GBF-1 groups, although albumin levels decreased. The plasma AGP values were higher in the HPS-2 group than in the GBF-1 group through the experimental period. In the HPS-2 group, ConA-reactive AGP reached levels 6.8-fold greater than control values and comprised 80% of total AGP at 4 days post-inoculation. In the lipopolysaccharide group, a great increase in ConA-reactive AGP was observed.  相似文献

Complete ruptures of the distal hamstring tendons rarely cause functional disability significant enough to warrant surgical intervention. Isolated ruptures of the distal semimembranosus tendon complex have not been reported previously in the literature. A case of a complete rupture of the distal semimembranosus tendon complex occurring in a professional football player with resultant functional disability is reported here. The magnetic resonance imaging scan was essential for an accurate diagnosis. Subsequent surgical repair and postoperative rehabilitation is described. Strict attention to recreating the multiple attachments of the semimembranosus tendon complex is recommended.  相似文献

Penicillium fellutanum produces a phosphorylated, choline-containing extracellular polysaccharide, peptidophosphogalactomannan (pP(x)GM) [where x is the number of phosphodiester residues]). The 13C-methyl-labeled pP(x)GM ([methyl-13C]pP(x)GM) was prepared from the cultures supplemented with L-[methyl-13C]methionine and was used as a probe to monitor the fate of phosphocholine in this polymer. The addition of [methyl-13C]pP(x)GM to growing cultures in low-phosphate medium resulted in the disappearance within 5 days of [methyl-13C]phosphocholine and N,N'-dimethylphosphoethanolamine from the added [methyl-13C]pP(x)GM. Two 13C-methyl-enriched cytoplasmic solutes, choline-O-sulfate and glycine betaine, were found in mycelial extracts, suggesting that phosphocholine-containing extracellular pP(x)GM of P. fellutanum is a precursor of intracellular choline-O-sulfate and glycine betaine. The mycelia cultured in low-phosphate (2 mM) medium contained glycine betaine and 1.5-fold more choline-O-sulfate than those grown in high-phosphate (20 mM) medium. The high levels of extracellular nonspecific phosphocholine:phosphocholine hydrolase and acid phosphomonoesterase observed in the low-phosphate culture medium are likely related to the release of phosphocholine from pP(x)GM and hydrolysis of phosphocholine, respectively. These results suggest that extracellular pP(x)GM of P. fellutanum provides phosphate needed as the environment becomes depleted of this nutrient. Choline, in excess of that needed immediately, is stored in the cytoplasm in forms that can be reutilized.  相似文献

Prospective, randomized, multicenter study in 267 patients with complicated urinary infection from 9 hospitals nationwide. Drug treatment was either Ceftriaxone 1 g once daily parenterally or Cefotaxime parenteral 1 g 8 hourly for a minimum of 7 days. Patients were clinically, analytically and microbiologically evaluated before and after treatment to assess the efficacy and tolerance of both drug products. To evaluate treatment cost, we used the price of both drugs and the material required for their administration (syringe and disposable needle). 119 patients were excluded from the cost-efficacy evaluation and 148 remained in the study (75 assigned to treatment with Ceftriaxone and 73 to Cefotaxime). Clinical efficacy of treatment was 93% and 87.6% for Ceftriaxone and Cefotaxime respectively (p > 0.05). Cost per patient was 27,347 pesetas for Ceftriaxone and 34,490 for Cefotaxime (p < 0.05).  相似文献
